Asphalt shingles
Manufacturers: Owens Corning, Tamko, Certainteed, GAF, Elk, Malarkey
Asphalt shingles offer variety and affordability as well as resistance to wind and fire.Hail ratings for asphalt shingles are available from the manufacturer. Most all shingles today earn a UL Class A fire rating. This is the highest fire rating available and is required in many communities.
The most common asphalt shingles are 3-tabs, T-locks, and “dimensional” or “architecturals”. T-locks are no longer manufactured, but are still prevalent on many local homes. 3-tab shingles are available in 20 and 25 year manufacturer warranties. Dimensional shingles are heavier in weight and include 30, 40, and 50+ year warranties and offer a variety of styles. Layers and shadow lines provide a thick and random appearance on some, while different shapes simulate the appearance of slate on others.
Many of these products are designed for high wind areas, with warranties for up to 130mph.
In addition to the manufacturer’s warranty, 3R Roofing warranties all of our new installations with a five year transferable labor guarantee.
Tile
Manufacturers: Westile, Monier Lifetile
Tile is a durable option for today’s home owner. Typically made of clay or concrete, it is available in many colors and styles, including shake, slate and Spanish mission.Verification that your home can structurally support the weight of this type of system is required.
Metal
Manufacturers: Premium Panels, Drexel Metals
Metal products offer a unique look and are a durable roof system. They are primarily made of steel and have a resilient finish. Metal roofs are long lasting, energy efficient and extremely low maintenance. There are many different styles to choose from, including interlocking shingles, exposed fastener panels, and standing seam systems.
Stone coated steel
Stone coated steel is a popular choice for homeowner’s who desire the combined benefits of appearance, performance, and environmental virtue. It is available in a wide variety of colors and styles. SCS is our fastest growing system of preference. It is light, durable, and is typically manufactured with very high recycled content. It is installed as an elevated system, which provides for optimal ventilation characteristics, keeping your home cool and energy efficient. SCS has superior wind and hail resistance and many types are energy star rated.
Wood shakes and shingles
This natural roofing material usually made from cedar has long been a popular choice.Cedar shakes are hand-split and are available in medium and heavy thickness, while shingles are machine-sawn. Our area’s dry climate and fire hazard concerns have limited the use of these products in recent years. The city of Boulder does not permit new installations of cedar shake or shingles and has mandated the replacement of all wood roofs by the year 2013. Boulder county allows the installation of shakes that have been fire treated to meet UL Class C fire rating in the plains and Class A in the foothills. We recommend checking with your local building department regarding requirements that apply to wood shingle installations.
Single ply/flat
Manufacturers: Certainteed, Firestone, Versico
EPDM membrane, or commonly referred to as rubber, is a popular choice for both residential and commercial flat applications. This system performs well under decks, patios, or as the roof itself. Thermoplastic olefin, or “TPO”, is an increasingly popular system due primarily to its excellent reflective properties and energy efficiency. Other systems include modified bitumen, an asphalt based material, and PVC products.
